Preview: Tom Allen at the Epstein Theatre, Liverpool
The best dressed man in comedy is heading to the Epstein Theatre. Alan Parry takes a look at Tom Allen.
The superb writer and stand-up comedian Tom Allen brings his show Absolutely to Liverpool’s Epstein Theatre on Thursday 6th September.
The show forms part of a lengthy UK tour on the back of a successful month at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2017.
Allen, aside from being the best dressed man in comedy, is perhaps the best of a number of promising talents working the circuit presently, and we are sure he is destined for big things. But you don’t have to take our word for it, you see he’s already racking up the awards, winning both the So You Think You’re Funny award in Edinburgh, and the BBC New Comedy Award in the same year.
In terms of style, he could perhaps be likened to Joan Rivers and Julian Clary as he can be truly caustic. But, if you are going to walk that tightrope, you have to be considered, confident and above all incredibly funny. Allen is all three, and while he owes something to those aforementioned, he is certainly blazing his own path.
His work is contemporary, and although many are now acutely aware of his sexuality, this hasn’t always been the case. In a 2014 interview with The Guardian, Allen went as far as to say that ‘I’ve never wanted my sexuality to be the only thing I talk about; there’s more to a person than what they get up to in the bedroom’.
With this being the case at that time, although his true self wasn’t far from the surface, Allen intended to write and perform comedy that resonated more broadly stating in that same interview that he believed the ‘best bits in comedy are when a comic says something and you … think: “Yes! That’s me too – I thought I was the only one”’ To this end he has been successful, his output is a blend of the narrative, and of the observational, but glimpsed through the lens of a proud gay man.
He’s likely a familiar name and face to fans of television comedy programming, having appeared on shows such as Mock the Week, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, and Live at the Apollo.
However, you now have the opportunity to witness the unsanitised live version, where the wit is sure to be that much more acerbic.
Tom Allen plays Liverpool’s Epstein Theatre on Thursday 6th September.
