Preview: Seasick Steve at Liverpool Olympia
Liverpool’s Olympia hosts Seasick Steve this autumn as part of a mammoth European tour. Gary Dougherty with the forecast.
Seasick Steve is something of an enigma. Was he born in 1941 or 1951? Was he really a hobo or has he spent most of his career as a session musician? Is he really the silent partner in ZZ Top or did he grow that beard to win a bet?
OK, so I made that last one up, but genuinely who cares if Seasick Steve is real or a fabricated persona? Peel back the persona or take it with a pinch of salt and you still have a tour-de-force, an original in a sea of sameness, an eccentric in the land of the bland.
Whether you like Seasick Steve or not you can’t deny that he’s a refreshing addition to the cadre of modern artists. With hubcap-guitars, a stomp box and a voice like he’s been gargling on gravel, Steve falls into a classical blues style – gritty, raw and earthy. Since breaking onto the UK music scene in 2006, he has won the 2007 MOJO Award for Best Breakthrough Act, released 8 albums, played countless festivals and toured extensively.
He releases his ninth album Can U Cook on 28th September 2018 and is touring it in Europe and the UK through October and November.
After playing in eight dates in France, Germany and Denmark he embarks on a nine date tour of the UK before returning to Belgium and France for a further two gigs. All this is on the back of playing eight festivals in Belgium, Switzerland, Italy and the Czech Republic through the summer.
Some have accused Seasick Steve of embellishing the truth somewhat, but no one can accuse him of being a slacker.
Seasick Steve plays Liverpool Olympia on Tuesday 20th November 2018. Tickets available here.
