The Toronto native comes to Liverpool for an incredibly rare show. Paul Fitzgerald has the lowdown.

Naked Lunch Cafe has been an important central focus in the recent resurgence of the Smithdown Road area.

The creative thinkers of the co-operative behind the Cafe are keen for it to be seen in wider terms as a meeting place, exhibition space, and increasingly as an intimate live music venue. Recent performances from artists such as Peter Bruntnell and John Murry have seen a packed candlelit room of appreciative audiences. Interestingly, the close confines of the space goes in its favour, encouraging artists to adapt their sets, revealing new layers to their work, trying out new songs or different versions of favourites. As a venue, it is a valuable and unique new addition not only to its locale, but also to the city’s rich musical offer.

Now, another special evening comes the way of Naked Lunch, in the shape of an all too rare performance by Toronto’s Marker Starling.

Piano led, with rich melodic structures and pop-jazz leanings, Starling’s writing is romantic and intoxicating. He writes as wisely of the everyday as he does the extraordinary moments in his life with equal ease, and his ability to draw the listener in as observer, friend and confidant is compelling. The strength and power of his voice is all held in its understated, bare and mellowed delivery. Often accompanied with nothing but the most rudimentary drum machine beat and the piano, the melody and lyric is given far greater voice and depth.

Starling, real name Chris Cummings, brings his sweet, sun blushed melodies to Smithdown on 11th November in support of his new album Anchors & Ampersands.

The album is a collection of his most favoured moments from his 20 year career. Not a greatest hits collection exactly, nor a compilation. He’s reimagined and rearranged some of his favourite songs and recorded them live, to breathe new life into them as well as to offer fans something a little celebratory and different.

The perfect choice from Naked Lunch for yet another evening of dimly lit memorable moments.
