The highly respected comedian comes to Southport in January, and Alan Parry tells you why you should be excited.

Cricket enthusiast and biting, satirical comedian Andy Zaltzman brings his unique brand of social criticism to Southport in January as he continues to tour his Satirist For Hire show.

At a time when politics is never off the agenda, Zaltzman’s take on the world is always good value. With this being so, he has made telling appearances on such topical news programmes as BBC’s Question Time and The Politics Show.

However, he is perhaps best known for his radio work and the hit podcast series, The Bugle, which has a mass audience from around the globe. Zaltzman too, has been a regular at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe since 1999, at which he was unfortunate to lose out to David O’Doherty in the acclaimed, So You Think You’re Funny award, in perhaps the most fiercely contested final which also included Russell Howard and the brilliant Josie Long.

Two years later, his debut full length show was nominated for the best newcomer award, and although he lost out again, his stock continued to rise. He is highly respected by his peers and his list of collaborators reads like a who’s who of British comedy royalty, from Al Murray and Rory Bremner, to John Oliver and Daniel Kitson. Further to that, he went on to win the much-coveted comedian’s comedian Piece of Wood award at the 2007 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

?Stewart Lee on Liverpool, a cultural monopoly & pining for festivals?

Zaltzman has co-created and hosted several radio shows, notably, The Department, and Andy Zaltzman’s History of the Third Millennium. Whilst he also has many television entertainment appearances to his name, including those on Russell Howard’s Good News, and The Alternative Comedy Experience, presented by comedy stalwart, Stewart Lee.

With Brexit looming, and the uncertainty surrounding Theresa May’s tenure, there is probably no better time to go and listen to somebody as well informed, and capable of presenting information for mass consumption as Zaltzman.

Times like these are ideal for political satirists, and there is probably none better in the country than the uncompromising Andy Zaltzman.

Andy Zaltzman plays The Atkinson, Southport on Saturday 13th January 2018. Tickets are available now.
