L100 Spotlight #5: Tony Broke
A Liverpool hip hop veteran with a beer swigging, foul mouthed, occasionally homeless, street fighting and penniless alter ego. DJ2Kind introduces us to the artist formerly known as T.L.
You would have to go back to a time before many of our Planet Slop subscribers were even putting sentences together to begin the story of one of Liverpool’s most dedicated, professional and authentic Hip Hop ‘B-Boys’.
Beginning his Hip Hop Journey as T.L and recently reinventing himself as the beer swigging, foul mouthed, occasionally homeless, street fighting and penniless alter ego (without the ’ego’) Tony Broke.
T.L (real name Tony Lawson) has been at the centre of Liverpool’s Hip Hop movement since the early 90s when he formed one of the cities first Hip Hop crews O.I.C. (Order in Chaos).
Over the years he has hosted for numerous events alongside No Fakin’ and as part of the L100 Cypher and shared the stage with some of Hip Hop’s most talented artists from the UK and overseas.
His link up with Blah Records brought the 2014 collaboration with Liverpool’s Mr Bang On and West Coast underground rapper Ras Kass to bring out the EP Money in the Bag which further showed T.L’s ability to mix it with our American cousins on a track which some say was his best work to date.

PS: Who are you and what do you do?
TB: Tony Broke AKA T.L, and I’m MC/Rapper from Liverpool.
PS: How would you describe your music in three words?
TB: Raw. Unapologetic. Honest.
PS: What was your last non music related social media post?
TB: A re-post from a friend about what makes Toxteth in the Liverpool 8 area what it is.
PS: What do people admire about you?
TB: Not sure. Probably my commitment to music. Or that I’m the best drunk rapper after Sprungy.
PS: If you had to eat take out for the next seven years – where would it be?
TB: It would have to be Indian or Chinese. They won’t let me into Nandos after last time!
PS: Who are your musical heroes?
TB: Organized Konfusion and KRS ONE.
PS: What was the first record or CD you bought with your own money?
TB: Sugar Bear’s Don’t Scandalize Mine was my first single, and my first album was by ED O.G. and Bulldogs.
PS: What annoys people about you?
TB: Probably that I didn’t fulfil my potential, or that I’m still rapping after all of these years!!!
PS: Who was the last person you spoke to on the phone?
TB: My Son.
PS: What is the best live show you’ve ever performed at?
TB: The early Phat Skillz Shows in the 90s were incredible. The No Fakin’ shows were unbelievable and ahead of their time, I was given the chance to perform at a Kool Herc show and at the Boom Bap festival in 2016 with Cult of the Damned. Can’t pick one!
PS: Best TV show/series ever?
TB: I always start these great shows but never finish them, I lose track and don’t bother. But based on what I have seen Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones are both decent!
PS: If you had to listen to THREE artists for the next 10 years, it would be?
TB: Joey Bada$$, Kendrick Lamar and anyone on the Blah Records Label.
PS: People should check out Tony Broke because…
TB: If you like good music and honest, raw reflective lyrics, then this will be for you. And you will also be contributing towards the ‘over 40 category contribution fund’ to help Tony Broke buy a new car and maybe get a round of drinks in!
