Gay Times have chosen Liverpool as the first destination outside of London for their annual ceremony.  Alan Parry reports.

On the back of what has been described as the biggest ever Pride festival and march the city has ever seen, and last year’s Coming Out contemporary art exhibition, Liverpool has been chosen to host this year’s Gay Time Honours, the magazine’s esteemed annual awards ceremony.

The event itself will take place at the glittering Walker Art Gallery on November 8th, and several prominent faces and figures from the LGBTQ+ community and beyond will be in attendance. A tribute will be made to Michael Causer, marking the tenth anniversary of his death following a homophobic attack in 2008; while a headline performer is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

With this decision, Liverpool becomes the first UK city to hold a flagship Gay Times event of this scale outside of London, and we couldn’t be any prouder.

Gay Times owner James Frost has even gone on record to say that “Liverpool is a wonderfully vibrant, thriving and culturally diverse city so it is a natural destination for Gay Times Honours“.

It has been suggested in some quarters that this decision was influenced by the Walker’s ongoing commitment to LGBTQ+ representation in its permanent and temporary collection, as much as by the city’s growing reputation as a booming hub of culture and diversity.

The event itself will see awards bestowed upon ten individuals, who will go on to have unique portraits of themselves displayed in the Walker Art Gallery in the fortnight which follows.

Frost described these honours as being “all about shining a light on people in the public eye, and those from everyday life, who have done remarkable things to advance the rights of the LGBTQ+ community“. The honourees are promised be a combination of notable celebrity personalities, and lesser known, but equally deserving “local heroes“.

Gay Times is Europe’s longest running LGBTQ+ magazine, and can boast of having the largest social reach of any gay publication worldwide. As recently as last year, a commitment was made to amplify queer voices from all corners of the world.
