With the Brighton duo stepping up a gear to arenas, Glenn Gibson hails the return of the new kings of UK rock
This winter something big is coming to get you.
No we don’t mean Jon Snow and his gang of incestuous bores. We’re talking about the new kings of the UK rock scene, Royal Blood, with the two piece set to play their biggest tour to date later this year, including a date at Manchester Arena on November 16th.
Casting our minds back to Liverpool Sound City in 2014 and a capacity crowd at the Arts Club was well aware of the potential that Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher possessed as they tore through their set at break neck speed.
For when the duo released their self-titled debut, it provided a dose of adrenaline that many would say the UK music scene needed after the flood of Britpop polluted sterile murk that had found its way onto the airwaves.
Quite how many people then would think that some three years later, the duo would be responsible for two of the biggest selling rock albums of our times, with both their eponymous debut and their new long player How Did We Get So Dark? Topping the charts, not to mention selling out arena’s across their homeland, Europe and beyond is anyone’s guess, but we are sure there are plenty who would say they did.
On their latest release, the group have continued to expand on their sound to include harmonies and synths, proving doubters wrong that they would be a one trick pony.
Let’s be honest here – if the likes of Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and Jimmy Paige are calling you the best rock band in the world, chances are you’re doing well and who are we to disagree.
Tickets are available now.
