Jimmy’s Liverpool Opening This Week
New live music venue opens on Bold Street this week. Brian Sayle has the lowdown.
This week (1st Aug) will see the opening of another new venue in Liverpool as Jimmy’s opens its doors in The Havelock Building, or old Cabin Club as we knew it.
When it was announced at the end of March that the guys from the Manchester venue we’re branching out to this end of the M62, the news was very well received in Liverpool. Let’s be honest, we’ve never got over the loss of the Kazimier and since then The Magnet has also gone with others under threat. So this new venue with a capacity of 250 and situated at the top of Bold Street is perfect for what the city still needs. Not just for the local music scene but the Ropewalks area as well.
Director of events at Jimmy’s is Ben Taylor, who for many years has been working on venues around Manchester including Night & Day Cafe but also a couple which are no longer with us The Roadhouse and Sound Control. Manchester as well as Liverpool have lost venues over recent years so it’s not just a Liverpool thing. But since they opened the Jimmy’s in the Northern Quarter they have been doing exceptionally well. Let’s hope they can bring the experienced gained from running venues in Manchester over to Liverpool and revitalise a spot that has lain dormant since the Cabin closed in 2015.
The new place isn’t just a venue though but also a bar and a restaurant that will be open during the week, so there is much more to the place then just music.
The opening night on Thursday August 1st will see The Coral headline, plus special guest Marvin Powell, and the calendar is already full for the month – with plenty of local and touring artists as well as some Liverpool nostalgia.
The second night is Skeleton Records artsiest Peach Fuzz – the gig tickets are free, and there’ll be a £5 donation on the door on the night. This is a special night in aid of mental health charity Wirral Mind, curated by Jimmy’s, You Are Not Alone Festival and Skeleton Key Records. Joining Peach Fuzz will be SHARDS, Kangaroos and Katy Alex, plus special guest DJ Edgar Jones.
August’s shows are:
1st: The Coral
2nd: The Peach Fuzz
3rd: The Blinders
8th: Little Triggers, The Bohos, Glass Caves
9th: Rory Wynne + guests The Jagz + Bluff_Band
