The Radar: Jessie Reyez

Tue 18 July, 2017

Ahead of this weekend’s adventures at LIMF, Soulfultiz shares the act he’s most looking forward to seeing.

The Liverpool International Music Festival is a beacon for great music from around the world.

This year’s event is just around the corner, and it features a stellar line-up features renowned artists such as Corinne Bailey Rae, JP Cooper and Xam Volo, along with specially commissioned events like Reminisce (a sold out ode to 90s R&B) and Garage Classical.

As exciting as it will be to see the big pop acts, along with up and comers such as Sinead Harnett, Etta Bond, Grace Kim and Neil Noa, one act booked to play stood out at the BET Awards a couple of weeks ago and it has made their performance highly anticipated.

That act is Toronto born singer-songwriter Jessie Reyez – a straight-talking lyricist using her unique voice to emphasise extreme emotion with sheer grit.

Her career has been bubbling under for a while now.  She has worked with the likes of Salaam Remi (Amy Winehouse, Nas, Alicia Keys), Babyface (Chaka Khan, Madonna, TLC, Boyz II Men and most recently local heroes Mic LOWRY) and on Calvin Harris’ latest album Funky Wav Bounces Vol. 1.

Reyez appears to use her music as a way to invite us to listen to her story. Listening to songs such as Figures and Gatekeeper, it would seem that her songs are based on very real past experiences. The latter of these gives us an insight into both her vulnerability and strength, which are expressed with honesty and intensity.

She creates a sound which draws the listener in and enables us to instantly relate to her.

Be sure to catch her set on the Central Stage at LIMF on Sunday 23rd July from 3.45pm.
