Following on from successful performances on Live at the Apollo and Mock The Week, the award winning comic plays an intimate show at the Hot Water Comedy Club this May. Alan Parry reports.

Larry Dean (Mock the Week, Live at the Apollo) brings his latest show, Bampot to Liverpool in May on the back of an amazingly successful few years.

Dean has played to packed out venues across the globe and appeared on pretty much every TV show any contemporary stand-up would want to work on, and this is only the beginning.

This new 60 minute show which is already pulling in rave reviews across the board, ‘A stand-up with the popular touch and an easy swing to his style’ (The Guardian) proclaims to include his musings on his Scottishness, sodomites, his sexuality and self-esteem, and even evoked the following response from The Herald, ‘One of the most honest, moving and incredibly funny sets I’ve seen in a long time’ – high praise indeed.

Honesty is at a premium right now in a world where we cannot seemingly trust anything anybody tells us, regardless of the previous reliability of a source. And so, to hear a young man open himself up in the way that Dean does is refreshing to say the least.

It’s true, he’s not known for his elitist high concept material, but there is no shame in being popular, accessible and laugh out loud funny. And satisfyingly, he’s being rewarded for his efforts. To this end, we should make mention of is pair of Edinburgh nominations, 2015’s Best Newcomer (which saw him lose out to the brilliant Sofie Hagen) and 2018’s Best Show (eventual winner Rose Matafeo).

But more than this, Dean went one better in 2016, by winning the Best Show Amused Moose Award, defeating Flo & Joan among others with his show Farcissist.

The pace at which he develops is both frightening and exciting and is a testament to the hard work he has put in. Few are more deserving, and his stock will certainly continue to rise. Take the opportunity to see him in such an intimate venue while you can!

Larry Dean plays Liverpool’s Hot Water Comedy Club on Thursday 16th May 2019.
